My Christmas Scent: Amouage Lyric

My Christmas Scent: Amouage Lyric

I’ve just bought myself a Christmas present, unwrapped it and am wearing it with abandon. And yes, if you read the title of the post, you already know it’s Lyric by Amouage. It’s my favourite scent from the luxurious Omani brand and it has been on my to-buy list for years. I feel like I have displayed commendable discipline by buying something that’s actually on my list, rather than getting distracted by shiny new stuff. That basically counts as saving.

Lyric seems to me fitting for the season, too. As I’ve said before, I’m not massively into traditional Christmas scents – I love the smells themselves, but not the recreations as candles or perfumes (there are exceptions, but not that many. Lyric isn’t your average holiday scent, but the festive red bottle and the comfortable glamour it exudes make it very holiday-appropriate in my opinion.

It is well known that Lyric is a rose-centric perfume, but I’ve never gotten that much rose from it. Considering that I don’t care much for straight-up rose, it’s a good thing. To me, it’s just creamy, sandalwoody, gently spicy (cardamom!) gorgeousness. It certainly includes rose, but to my nose, it’s very much in the background, adding some luscious voluptuousness. It’s a glamorous scent that somehow manages to be almost cosy at the same time. Among my other bottles, it falls somewhere between Neela Vermeire Mohur (more rose, more nuance) and Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche (no rose at all, but the same creamy comfort). It plays in a lower register than either of these though, and is very much its own perfume.

I see people claiming on the great Interwebs that Lyric has been reformulated and the new version is apparently inferior to the previous one (it always is, if you believe the perfumistas). Maybe so. I don’t have any earlier versions at hand, so the only thing I can say is that I enjoy the current take and when I compare my thoughts now and three years ago, they are almost identical.

PS I apologise for my absence, I have been battling a virus. This is also why I’ve had to use a picture by the brand, rather than my own as usual. I hope I’m back on track now, however, and have grandiose plans for Best of 2016 posts next week.

This was my last year’s New Year gift to myself. It’s one of my favorite Amouage perfumes. I tried it many times throughout the years (from a store sample, then from the official sample set, and then from the bottle I bought) but I cannot say definitively one way or the other if it’s reformulated significantly or not.

Thank you for chiming in on the reformulation issue, that’s much appreciated! What other Amouages you like? Have you tried Myths? I liked it much better than I expected.

Since Amouage is my favorite brand (well, one of, to be precise), I have several perfumes that I love and wear, in addition to Lyric – Ubar, Gold, Memoir and Dia. I also have small decants of Epic, Beloved, Fate and Myths. I like Myths more than I thought I would but I’m not sure if I’ll need more than another decant of it.

What a gorgeous collection. I also like Epic a lot and Gold is beautiful, although I don’t wear it myself. Ubar is something I should retry, it was so intriguing.

So glad you got a bottle of this beauty. Like Undina, I bought mine last year as well. I don’t get a huge amount of rose from it either. In fact, I tend to get more ylang-ylang than rose on my skin. But I do get the lovely creamy sandalwood and a fair amount of incense and the whole bouquet is just divine and comforting and lush. Enjoy!

Yes, this is my impression as well, I guess it’s the incense that makes it darker than other similar perfumes. I will look for ylang-ylang in the future, that’s one thing I haven’t noticed.

As much as I think this line is wonderful I can’t wear any of them; something in them triggers my migraine. It also happens with Ormond Jayne(an expert explained that it probably has to do with some molecule in their formulation). But good for you that you bought this; treat yo’self!

It’s so frustrating when things like that happen. In Ormonde Jayne, I’m pretty sure it’s Iso E Super that’s the troublemaker – they use it very liberally. I used to like almost all OJ scents, but now I’m having trouble with that molecule myself. No headaches, but I just smell it in everything.

Enjoy your beautiful new perfume! Ditto re: smelling Iso E Super everywhere – I used to love it as a perfume note, now it is ALL OVER my city in laundry powder form. Must share my exciting Christmas perfume news – I received a bottle of L’Eau d’Hiver from my husband as my very first perfume gift from him, and he bagged a bottle of Portrait of a Lady for himself. I feel like my life has become operatic as a result. Beauty! Drama! Laundry powder doesn’t stand a chance against us!
