Best of 2016: Style, Food and Everything Else

Best of 2016: Style, Food and Everything Else

I’ve done the books, the skincare, the makeup and the perfume, but I still have some favourites left. This is the last one, I promise.

1. Tanel Veenre jewellery. I’m not a big jewellery wearer, but IF I’m going to wear any, it better make a statement. 2016 was the year that I became the happy owner of a unique and amazing Tanel Veenre tiara. It was also a year, however, that he started making bracelets. As someone with non-pierced ears, I’m beyond thrilled. I own the middle and left one from the picture below and in case there are any of the colourful versions (see cover picture) left, I’ll get at least one of those, too.

2. Lanolips. This was supposed to be in the skincare favourites, but I couldn’t find the tube for the picture and hence forgot to mention it. I own the La Mer lip balm and the By Terry lip balm and about ten other cult/very expensive lip balms and Lanolips beats them all.

3. Baby Foot. I bought this foot peel in Japan and then proceeded pretty much as described here. And yes, what seemed like 376854 layers peeled off my feet, leaving me with almost baby soft skin (it didn’t quite get rid of everything, but most of the rough skin did go). The main downside is that the peeling process takes several days, so if you need to expose your toes in public during that time, you might want to reconsider.

4. Maison Méert sweets. Méert is a French patisserie established in Lille in 1761 and they still produce the most prettily packaged nostalgic sweets and elaborate cakes. They are famous for their thin waffles, but everything I’ve tried is lovely. I adore their blond chocolate with pistachios and cherries and the tea tins are beautiful. If you want a luxurious edible gift that isn’t as ubiquitous as Laduree or Pierre Herme, this is a nice option. The availability is limited, though – in addition to Lille, there are outposts in Paris, Brussels and Roubaix.

5. Smoked soy sauce. If sweets are not your thing, I also have something savoury to recommend. I bought a bottle of Enji Kunsei Smoked Shoyu when in Japan and it’s genius. It’s literally smoked soy sauce and it has the most wonderful, intense flavour. You can use it to flavour meat or fish, add it to dressings or dips or even rice. It’ll make your ramen taste a bit rustic and seriously good.

6. Culottes. In style terms, it was the year of polonecks and velvet, chokers and slip dresses, Vetements and oversized puffer jackets. The most enduring legacy of this year for me, however, might be the establishment of the wide cropped trouser as a modern wardrobe staple. In my search for work clothes in the post-sheath dress era, culottes have emerged as one of the most viable options. No longer a trend item, they just look right and work great with the abovementioned poloneck, with chunky knits and cashmere, with a white shirt, a sculptural top or a shrunken jacket (watch Victoria Beckham do it here). Crucially they look great both with heels and flats and if they seem too boring, just go for a bold colour.

7. Cashmere track suit. I’m not going to waste space here, I have already covered this point and my love has only grown stronger.

8. Sensi bags. I had been stalking this straw tote from Sensi Studio for months, until I finally bought it on sale from Net-a-Porter. It was still expensive for a straw bag, but I fully expect to be using it for years to come. They have other nice options in the range, in case you prefer something more classic.

9. Craftory accessories. If you are in need of a simple leather glove for your tech, look no further. Well designed, beautiful and reasonably priced.

10. Flamingos and mimosas. I don’t think I need to elaborate.

What were you pleased with last year?

PS I’ve used official pictures for Tanel’s jewellery, as mine just don’t do them justice.

    1) All the lipsticks 2) Everything in velvet 3) Opera – from a last-minute invitation to Glyndebourne, to seeing my favourite Der Rosenkavalier again, it was an excellent year for an artform I don’t fully understand but wholeheartedly love 4) Frederic Malle coming to town – I have never been so happy about a corporate takeover 5) A trip to Budapest has given me musical, literary, historical and culinary inspiration to carry me into next year and beyond 6) Your blog – from the colour yellow to the A-Word (which set me thinking about it for days) it was always rewarding to read and often inspiring 7) Butterflies – yes I know they’re a bit hackneyed as a motif, but stumbling across a wide meadow full of them in the Buda Hills was a miraculous sight, especially after reading Nabokov 8) Abel Gance’s five-and-a-half hour epic film about Napoleon (1927), which has inspired me to stop running away in fright from any film longer than three hours, and to get to grips finally with the French Revolution. The Penguin little black classic on Waterloo by Victor Hugo has a hand in kicking off this interest too! P.S. I’m not usually so high culture, but this was a year that demanded big ideas in response to all the madness.

I liked your list (and now I’m extremely curious about ##2, 3 and 5 – thanks!) but have absolutely nothing to share, which gave me an idea (so, thank you again 🙂 ) to make an effort this year, as it goes, to register everything that I like, or what makes me happy. I’m not even sure I’ll want to share it with others in the form of a list but I suspect looking at such list will increase my enjoyment of all those things.

This is a great idea, because – although it seems strange – we sometimes forget what we enjoy. It’s rather pathetic, but I sometimes find an old post by accident and get inspired. Also, that smoked soy sauce is epic.
