Zome by Jaanus Orgusaar

I’m not quite sure what the etiquette is when it comes to expressing feelings for one’s furniture, but I’m relatively certain it’s considered somewhat déclassé to be too vocal and sentimental about a divan or a lacquer cabinet one happens to own and like.

But when people are madly in love, they don’t care much for appearances and just want to tell everyone how wonderful the object of their affection is. So when friends come to visit and compliment the ceiling lamp by Jaanus Orgusaar that hangs in our kitchen, I just refuse to be a good Estonian and say something like ‘oh, that old thing, I don’t even know how it got here’. Because I completely agree with them. This lamp is stunning.

Zome is a simple but striking ceiling light with a huge dome-shaped shade. I’m not sure the size is evident from the pictures, but it’s 94 cm in diameter and the bulb is oversized, too. When it’s lit in the dark, it casts hazy geometrical shadows on the walls. You can buy it now in natural birch plywood, but ours is completely white.

The only problem with Zome is not its own fault. Because it’s big, it needs quite a lot of air around it and it can be difficult to combine with other statement pieces. That said, it plays nicely with our rather pretentious kitchen floor and I’m sure skilful styling can fit Zome into many different interiors. There used to be a smaller version available and you can of course enquire after it, but if you can, go all in.

It’s impossible to get a reasonable picture of the light and the floor together, but just to give you an idea:
